About the Artist-A little info about me and how I got started drawing the Barely Human comic strip.

About Myself

My Name is Raymond Branch ( As if you didn't know), and I hail from the great city of Dayton, Ohio, ( Really... it is ).  I have always loved cartoons when I was growing up, but never considered actually drawing them.  One day I had to choose an elective for high school, so I chose Art for an easy "A", ( and get next to a girl I really liked ) but once I picked up a pencil and started drawing, I found that not only can I draw, but I actually enjoyed it.

After that, I decided to make commercial art my life's ambition, and enrolled in Sinclair Community College. I enjoyed the classes but it didn't really feel right.  One day I thought up a great idea for a comic strip, Barley Human. I read books on the subject, and started drawing the characters. Finally with great overconfidence, I submitted my work to all the syndicates, and of course I got rejected, so I gave up.  Yet, the desire was still there, and after I reviewed my submission, I found that it was horrible. There was no characterizations, the art was poorly done, it was just plain ugly. ( I did the whole thing with a ball point pen.)

So after cleaning up my artwork and fleshing out the different characters, I decided to give it another try.  Around this time I developed a love for working on the computer, so I decided to use my machine to cut some corners and make it look really professional (In hindsight, it still looked horrible.) Though it took longer than I wanted, I finally submitted my work.  I really didn't like the end result, but it was still a vast improvement.  Although, I got rejected again, two of them stood out. They were personal rejections from the editors, usually they send form letters.  Both thanked me for the submissions but it didn't suit their needs.  I took it as meaning that I was a finalist in the selection process and that I was on the right track.  When I got onto the web, I realize I can publish my work on my web page and maybe prove that my strip deserves to be syndicated.....or maybe not.
