The Bear Facts

• The name Barely Funky is amalgam of two strips I wanted to produce, Barely Human and The Funky Felines. I still haven't got around to producing the latter.
• The strip's title has a double meaning. "Barely Human" refers to the way the bears act. "Bearly Human"  means bears acting human.
• Inspired by U.S. Acres cartoon of Garfield and Friends TV show.
• The characters were originally going to be sheep until a friend in college asked me "Why sheep?" so after much thought I changed them to bears
• Their original  last name was Bruin
• Their current last name Carnivore, is also the classification of bears, meaning meat eaters
• Technically their species are Black Bears

• The name of their species are Black Bears, a misleading name because this particular species comes in different shades of brown
• They are carnivores, meaning meat eaters, another misleading name because bears have evolved to become omnivores, meaning they eat both meat and vegetables
• I chose Black Bears because they were the smallest species of bear prominent in the U.S. (When they stand on their hind legs)
• Bears are lazy creatures with huge appetites
• Bears have heighten senses, great strength, and thick fur that can resist bee stings.
• Bears have sharp teeth and claws

• Teddy's original name was Myron and later Jason
• Model son- Responsible, likes to perform many charitable events, and doesn’t get an allowance because he earns his own money through assorted means. This creeps people out and thinking he has a dark side.
• He and his sister Terry share the same room and he considers her a as brother.
• His teddy bear cuteness coupled with an accommodating and affable nature make him very desirable to all the girls in school and some adults who can’t resist hugging and kissing him
• His unofficial full name is Theodore Roosevelt Carnivore.
• Teddy gets his name from, naturally, a teddy bear. Teddy bears get their name from the president, Teddy is named after.
• The first character drawn by yours truly.

• Terry's original name was Venice, my second sister's middle name.
• Terry was originally created to be a cheerleader
• Cross Dresser- She often wears her brother’s clothes because she has no fashion sense of her own and hates being called that.
• Into all kinds of athletic fare and interests
• Full name: Theresa Carnivore.

• Full name: Johnnie Faye Carnivore. She is named after my mother.
• Johnnie's original name was Angela, then Angel and later Honey
• Learned how to speak by watching television.
• Born and raised in the woods, with a temperament to match.
• Not as adapt to human life as the other thus she comes across as uncouth.

• Jeffery's name was originally James but I changed it so it can rhyme with the other bears names
• The mastermind behind the clan move to human civilization
• Much to everyone’s chagrin, luck always seem to be with him.
• Of all the characters, this was the hardest to figure. I almost killed him off and almost made Johnnie a single mother. It would’ve made sense because the male bear leaves the female to raise the cubs on her own.
• Though he is a profiteer, he’s far from being a frugal cheapskate.
• Adores his temperamental wife very much, although no one knows why.

• She was originally named Cascade, a bit character I created in my very first attempt at the series. Cascade was Terry's rival in the cheerleader squad
• After participating in an internet crossover, Fright Night 2000, in which Terry becomes a "were-cheerleader", Heather was recreated.
• Heather claims she and Terry were once best friends who met every summer at camp. When her family moved to the same school district as Terry, she was upset that Terry didn’t recognized her and swore vengeance.
• She would get revenge by messing up Terry through assorted means, i.e. pies, food, water, mud, etc. She and Terry blame each other for starting the "Flan Wars" and only takes action to even the score. This is called The Flan Wars. Flan means the substance used to mess the other up with, i.e. pies, food, etc.  I chose this method of revenge as oppose to them get physically violent.
• Heather is her middle name.
• She has an obsession for Terry
• A sample of her obsession. She dyed her hair the same color as Terry.
• Aside from physical appearance, she and Terry do have a lot in common.
• Both have professed hatred for each other, yet they seem to always be hanging out together.
